Adams touts economic growth in EP debate
Bob Adams said Wednesday he would fight for bold tax reform to jump start West Virginia's economy and chart a new direction for economic action that would more fully reward the state's Eastern Panhandle.
Adams, GOP candidate for the state Senate in the 16th District, was going head to head with his Democrat opponent, former state Senator Herb Snyder, in a debate in Charles Town sponsored by The Journal and WEPM.
Snyder said he supported Gov. Joe Manchin's cautious approach to tax reduction. Throughout the debate, Snyder basically echoed his support for current economic policies in Charleston.
Adams said West Virginia needed a dramatic jolt, comparing the state's economy to a heart attack patient who needs an electric shock from a defibrillator.
Other topics touched on during the debate were teacher and state trooper retention, strip club regulation and fuel taxes. Read The Journal's coverage.
Two debates were held in Charles Town on Wednesday, the first between state Senate candidates Herb Snyder and Bob Adams (above left), and the second between Secretary of State candidates Natalie Tennant and Charles Minimah (below left).
Minimah touts voter ed, and Tennant admits she reads Republican Gazette
Secretary of State candidate Charles Minimah on Wednesday described how his personal history and his appreciation for America and its democracy would drive him to promote voter education and participation.
His opponent, Democrat Natalie Tennant, at one point discussed the "new media" that has become an increasingly important factor in politics, and, spotting ye old editor sitting among the spectators, said, "I see Gary in the audience and I have to admit I check in on the Republican Gazette every day."
In fact, many Democrats and Democrat officeholders are regular readers, but few admit it so publicly. Therefore, the Republican Gazette will resist the temptation today to take too many potshots at Ms. Tennant, but it must be said that at one point, in response to a question on voter fraud, she offered a rather convoluted answer about what could be considered fraud and what could not, leading one observer in the audience to suggest she had mastered "Marion County mumbo jumbo," much in the same way as another Marion Countian, Gov. Joe Manchin.
Minimah discussed several programs he wants to bring to the office, including finding innovative ways to bring about a positive change to motivate registered voters to participate in the process.
Minimah points out that with about 40 percent average turnout in presidential and statewide elections and even less for local elections, people in West Virginia are frustrated because they believe their votes don’t count. Minimah says restoring voter confidence is key.
Weeks, Manchin square off in Round 2 tonight
Russ Weeks and Joe Manchin will square off in Round 2 of their four rounds of debates, this one taking place at Hedgesville High School in the Eastern Panhandle.
This debate, which will also feature Mountain Party candidate and actor Jesse Johnson, will be different than Monday's event sponsored by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association, in that the general public is welcome to attend.
Other differences include opening remarks as well as closing comments, and candidates having the opportunity to ask the other candidates a question.
Meanwhile, word from the recent interim session of the legislature is that even many Democrat lawmakers were happy that Weeks was aggressive in taking an aggressive approach on issues on which the governor is seldom directly challenged.
