BOB ADAMS
Residents who commute from the Eastern Panhandle into Washington D.C., Virginia and
Maryland are being faced with the loss of the MARC train, a Maryland rail line that serves West Virginians in that region of the state. Maryland is considering ending the West Virginia leg of the rail due to budget problems.
State Senate candidate Bob Adams said Thursday he has had discussions with officials of Pan Tran bus service about offering a Brunswick to Martinsburg route if MARC Train 883 is lost to West Virginia, as some are anticipating.
“I applaud and encourage Congresswoman Capito’s efforts to maintain Train 883,” said Adams today. “Having been a MARC Train commuter myself for many years, I understand the last thing people want at the end of the work day is to get off the train and jump on the bus to go home.  But if that loss is something we cannot prevent, Pan Tran is an option, and maybe the only option left to us.”
Adams noted that Maryland’s deepening budget woes could mean that Eastern Panhandle commuters are less than 90 days from having their lives turned upside down.
“If Maryland can eliminate Train 883, who’s to say they can’t reduce service even more?” asked Adams. “In fact, there are many in Maryland who would like to see the state end MARC Train service to West Virginia completely.”
Adams said he has spoken with officials at Pan Tran about offering service from Brunswick to Martinsburg, and Pan Tran has expressed an interest in extending service beyond the West Virginia state line to Brunswick.
Adams said the concept of going to Brunswick has been discussed before due to a lack of parking at MARC Train commuter lots in West Virginia, so the concept is not entirely new.
“What would be necessary is a ‘single use exemption’ from the Maryland Transit Authority to permit Pan Tran to operate over their state line,” said Adams.  Pan Tran is working on a cost estimate for extending service to Brunswick.
“Clearly, the loss of Train 883 is something that could happen at any time, if not now, then at some point in the future,” said Adams. “We should lay the groundwork now to come up with a viable alternative.”
Howell consistently out-duels Williams in Senate race, shows impressive knowledge of issues
Gary Howell, Republican candidate for the 14th District State Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Jon Blair Hunter, continues to out-perform his Democrat opponent, Bob Williams, in forums and debates across the sprawling district.
Howell impresses everyone with his knowledge of the issues and his reasoned solutions. A successful businessman and active member of his Mineral County community, serving on several boards and commissions over the years, Howell is well versed not only on local and regional subjects, but on the positions of his opponent and the actions of the State Legislature over the years.
Howell has been aggressively campaigning all across the district. The video above is from a candidate forum in Keyser on Wednesday, and he and Williams faced off again Thursday night in a debate in Phillippi, where Howell again out-dueled Williams, who was stumped by Howell's challenge to give two or three examples of where he would have voted against Democrat leadership in the Senate.
Check out the video above to watch Williams tout his endorsements, with Howell following up on things that are really important.
Greear goes from seven to within two of McGraw
'Joe the Plumbers' out in force
McCain-Palin supporters were out in force Thursday in Charleston demonstrating their support for "Joe the Plumbers" across America who will be hurt by Barack Obama's tax hikes. The event took place on the even of Joe Biden's visit today.
Three weeks ago a poll commissioned by the State Journal showed Dan Greear within 7 points of Attorney General Darrell McGraw. Yesterday, the State Journal released its latest poll, and Greear now trails McGraw by 2 points, with eight percent remaining undecided.
"Obviously, we are elated by the results and are pleased all of our efforts are paying off," says Greear. "The result certainly surpassed even our most optimistic predictions for this point in the campaign."
