Ireland announces
NASS recipients
(Press Release) Secretary of State Betty Ireland announced Monday the 2008 recipients of the prestigious NASS Medallion Award for outstanding service promoting the goals of the National Association of Secretaries of State in the areas of elections, civic education and service to state government. This is the second year Secretary Ireland has presented these awards.
"Receiving the NASS Medallion Award means an individual, group or organization has demonstrated an outstanding civic commitment to our statewide community," Secretary Ireland said. "Each of the recipients we announce today has indeed established a very distinctive record in areas including responsible citizenship, voter registration, use of technology, and service to local elected officials and county government."
Recipients include: Paul J. Hutter, General Counsel, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Washington, D.C.; Dr. Gary L. Greenhalgh, Regional Account and Sales Manager, Casto & Harris, Inc., Spencer, West Virginia; the League of Women Voters of West Virginia; the County Commissioners'
Association of West Virginia; and the West Virginia Association of Counties.
Under Hutter's leadership, voter registration services at VA medical centers, including the four VA facilities in West Virginia, have experienced great success; Greenhalgh served on the Federal Election Commission, and has been a pioneer in the use of technology in the election process; the League of Women Voters of West Virginia, has established a longtime, nonpartisan record promoting responsible citizenship; the County Commissioners' Association has been a nonpartisan, statewide organization assisting local county governments; and the West Virginia Association of Counties, also a  nonpartisan organization, has a longtime record of assisting elected county officials.
"It's a pleasure to recognize and commend these outstanding individuals and organizations that have served our state. They are an accomplished group, and I certainly applaud their successful, civic engagement." Secretary Ireland said.
Recipients will be honored at an awards ceremony on October 23rd in Charleston.

Greear demands McGraw explain planned ad buy on gas issue with tax dollars
(Press Release) Attorney General Candidate Dan Greear has demanded Darrell McGraw explain his planned use of taxpayer dollars to fund radio ads promoting a series of town hall meetings across the state dealing with gas price issues.
Greear asked the press corps to do their due diligence
and follow-up with questions to the AG himself.
“We can’t find Darrell McGraw, or we’d ask him ourselves,” Greear said.  “The Attorney General’s Office, through political consultant Amy Shuler Goodwin, has been attempting to purchase ads promoting a series of town hall meetings throughout the state on gas prices.”
Greear blasted the potential use of taxpayer dollars 30 days out from the campaign. “This is wrong on so many levels, I’m not sure where to begin.  In 16 years, McGraw has never done anything on gas prices.  McGraw’s sudden interest in gas prices is clearly a terrible misuse of the office, considering gas prices have been over $4.00 all year and just now, 30 days out from the election, McGraw is interested.  He is using a political consultant to make the buys, while claiming they are not political.  And, he is trying to use taxpayer money to buy self-promotional radio ads to promote an issue he’s done nothing about.  This is bad, even for McGraw.”
“It’s time for these shenanigans to stop,” Greear commented.  “Everywhere I go people have had it with McGraw’s abuse of the office.  They want him out.  We will have the chance to take back control of the office and actually do the job it was meant to do.”
Greear continues traveling to all 55 counties to promote his message. His ad campaign, ‘Proven Leader, Positive Change” continues this week across the state.

Rear Admiral Tom Lynch, USN (Ret.) today issued the following statement on Barack Obama's accusation of American war crimes in Afghanistan:
"Barack Obama must disavow his comments equating American forces in Afghanistan to war criminals. This dangerous rhetoric emboldens our enemy, but it also speaks to Barack Obama's judgment and competency to serve as commander in chief. While his remarks were designed to score political points with the left wing of his party during the primary, Barack Obama stands by the comments even after securing the nomination. By defending his words, Barack Obama makes it more difficult for our American heroes in uniform to complete the job we have asked them to do."
