COAL MINER DAUGHTERS -- Three ladies of the GOP recently toured Arch Coal's Mountain Laurel Mine in Logan County. Above, Delegates Kelli Sobonya, Carol Miller and Linda Sumner prepare for their tour. At right, Delegate Sobonya with an unidentified miner. Said Sobonya, "It was a fascinating trip to be able to see first hand the inner workings of a coal mine and to be able to make a better educated decision on legislation that affects one of our largest industries in West Virginia--coal."
AP reporter connects dots on WVU search
One of the more informative and up-to-date West Virginia blogs is that maintained by Associated Press reporter Lawrence Messina, and a new entry expands on his earlier reporting about Mike Garrison's personal and political connections.
In his typical "just the facts" fashion, Messina offers a balanced look at Garrison's connections, real or perceived, to WVU board members, search committee members and powerful families. You can check it out by clicking here.
New legal newspaper often has the scoop on courts
College Republicans invited to Moore fete at discount
State GOP Chairman Doug McKinney has announced that members of College Republican organizations around the state are being invited to attend the April 14 tribute to former First Lady Shelley Moore at a special discount.
Ticket price for the fundraiser at the Marriott in Charleston is $75, but a special $30 ticket is being offered to members of the College Republicans.
The event gets underway at 6 p.m.
One of West Virginia's latest entries in the news reporting business is The West Virginia Record, a publication based in Charleston focusing on legal and political news.
Edited by former Huntington Herald-Dispatch reporter Chris Dickerson, The Record often scoops its larger and more entrenched competitors, especially on court-related news items.
The Record also offers a nice mix of regular features,
including guest columns, breakdowns of news by county, and business news regarding hirings and promotions.
Like most legal journals, The Record consistently advocates tort reform, but as its editorial mission statement says, "We hope to provide an objective view of the playing field as well as an active forum for both sides of the argument so that all of us can decide for ourselves." It seems to live up to that ideal. You can check it out online at www.wvrecord.com.
