Ironic Quote of the Day
"...they have a right to do whatever they feel they have to do. It's a free country."
--Brenda Isaac, president of the Kanawha County Board of Health, responding today in The Charleston Gazette to a protest planned by bar owners upset with the county smoking ban, and apparently missing completely the irony of her own comment, since it is clear that business owners only have as much freedom as the Kanawha County Board of Health allows by dictate.
Greear-McGraw race featured in Wall Street Journal
The Dan Greear-Darrell McGraw matchup is gaining national attention.  The Wall Street Journal Friday featured a story on the race, and it was not flattering for the incumbent.
"Our campaign is gaining national importance and will continue to do so because it is a perfect matchup of everything that is wrong with the current officeholder and AG offices throughout the nation versus our campaign's message of positive change," said a statement from the Greear campaign.
HOWELL JOINS OFFICIALS IN LIVESTOCK PURCHASES -- State Senate candidate Gary Howell joined elected officials in purchasing champion livestock last week at the Mineral County Fair. Above, from left, Sheriff candidate Paul Sabin, assessor Rose Ann Main, Gary Howell, Delegate Bob Schadler, Amanda Michael, Del. Alan Evans, and Sen. Dave Sypolt with Michael's reserve champion feeder calf. Below, the same group poses with Brent Ebert after purchasing Ebert's reserve champion sheep. Both animals were donated back and reauctioned, and the money given to a 4-H college scholarship fund. Howell is a candidate in the 14th District.
Boley wonders why governor dragging feet on appointments
State Sen. Donna Boley is questioning why July has come and gone and still five West Virginia community and technical colleges are without local governing boards.
As reported last week in the Parkersburg News & Sentinel, "With the passage of a recent house bill providing for a local board of governors for five state community and technical colleges, including West Virginia University of Parkersburg, Gov. Joe Manchin was supposed to make appointments by the end of June."
Boley pointed out in the article that, "The governor pushed this bill and knew in March he had until the end of June... Manchin is the one who said you need the local control and he won't take the time to make these recommendations that he has in front of him."

Bush tells supporter 'I'll be dead' by the time history is kind
Martinsburg resident and GOP activist Jerry Mays attended President Bush's visit to the Greenbrier last week and tells this story:
"I was front row center at the Bush visit at The Greenbrier... I told him that 'history would be good to him.'  He said he'd be dead by the time that happened, then added that he wasn't in it for himself, but for the American people. Got another big cheer and applause from those nearby.
"Later in the day, I heard his Rose Garden remarks about Iraq.  He was very stiff there, but loose as a goose with coal folks.  It is obvious that he feels very comfortable with West Virginians!"
Bush was the guest speaker at the annual meeting of the West Virginia Coal Association.
Photo with Bush brings attention to GOP activist
On Friday, the Beckley Register-Herald published a photo of President Bush embracing an unidentified woman at his appearance at The Greenbrier, but I recognized her as Nancy Kogoy of Kanawha County, one of the best and busiest activists we have, and posted the photo here identifying her.
Over the weekend, Nancy sent a note saying, "Not sure how you discovered the picture, but am so happy you did. Might never have known of its existence.
"Thanks, also, for your offer to help me make a contact at the paper. With some persistance, I talked to the photographer and he is mailing me the picture.
"Heard from a high school classmate in Colorado and also Cleveland, Ohio, who had seen my picture on Republican Gazette. Don't ask me how it was passed along.  Just thought you would like to know the website was making the rounds on Friday."
No one deserved a hug from the president more than Nancy.
MANCHIN: I got hurt at WVU, had to get fixed at Marshall
Sometime in recent months, Gov. Joe Manchin appeared on a Marshall U. student talk show program, and said one telling thing after another, after rolling down the hall on his bike without a helmet.
