An exciting challenge and a change of pace
By Gary Abernathy
I'm very excited about the opportunity to serve as state director for the Fred Thompson presidential campaign.
I think the GOP is blessed with a number of great candidates for president, but Senator Thompson has always been my personal favorite and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to work with his many supporters around the state.
I think Senator Thompson is a great match for the issues important to the people of West Virginia, and I know his supporters in West Virginia are looking forward to working hard on his behalf.
Naturally, these new duties require me to sever my official ties with the state party and the state GOP convention. I am grateful to Doug McKinney for asking me to help with the party, and I sincerely believe that the devotion and hard work he and Sue are putting into the party's future will pay big dividends, with the dedication of Republican leaders across the state.
I also think the new convention format for selecting delegates will be very exciting for Republicans around the state, and Bob Fish and his crew are doing a great job of bringing it all together.
Many faithful readers have asked me about the future of this website. Frankly, I'm not sure. My guess is that I will not have the time to update it regularly, and my new duties will likely mean that some wonderful Democrats will be off the hook for a while on these pages. I'll miss you, Mojo.
My biggest hope is that Republicans in West Virginia can come through this process without
numerous candidates, and has worked with companies and industry groups around the country on successful grassroots campaigns. Abernathy, a journalist from 1984 until 1996, served as newspaper editor, columnist, reporter, and has been the recipient of a number of distinguished awards.
"Gary Abernathy brings a wealth of grassroots and communications experience to our organization in West Virginia," said Thompson's National Political Director Randy Enwright.
"His political and communications experience, along with his knowledge of issues specific to West Virginia, will be a great asset to our campaign."
creating bitterness or divisiveness, and that we all rally enthusiastically behind the eventual nominee.
I have great respect for every Republican who aggressively supports their candidate, because it shows a dedication to civic responsibility and a concern about the future.
Good luck to everyone. As for you Fred Thompson supporters, don't hesitate to contact me if you don't hear from me first. Also, if you receive any information about the campaign in West Virginia from a Thompson supporter and want to make sure it has come from someone officially connected with the campaign, don't hesitate to check with me.
I think next year can be a great year for Republicans nationally and in West Virginia. Let's all work together to make that happen.
