UC fundraiser degenerates into Democrat rally
Friday's big gala fundraiser for the University of Charleston was allowed to degenerate into a rally for Democrats, according to witnesses at the event.
The big drawing cards, of course, were actress Jennifer Garner and actor husband Ben Affleck, who reportedly couldn't have looked more bored if he was stuck in the middle of a transatlantic flight for ten hours.
The Charleston Gazette quoted part of what Garner told the audience when she said, "That's what we need in this state. We need people who have been here their whole lives to want to commit to taking us into the next generation."
What Garner added, but was not reported, was, "We need more Democrats."
Garner spent a lot of time also promoting her Charleston buddy Corey Palumbo, and even UC President Ed Welch chimed in that Palumbo would make a good governor someday.
GOP rules at air show
Republicans ruled the roost at the Martinsburg Air Show over the weekend, with local candidates attracting thousands of visitors into a couple of different displays. At right is a carnival-like display provided by state Senate candidate Bob Adams, who raised thousands of dollars for the United Way with his exhibits.
Berkeley County Republicans also raised several thousand dollars by taking donations in exchange for wildly popular McCain-Palin signs. Observers not connected with either party said it was clear that the GOP booth was outdrawing the Democrat booth by a margin of about 40 to 1, as almost no one expressed interest in Obama-Biden signs or literature.
State Senate candidate Bob Adams provided entertainment from his Great Inflates party rental business to raise money for the United Way during the Martinsburg Air Show.

Manchin says not to worry about Obama, he can't do much anyway
Gov. Joe Manchin offered one of the strangest endorsements ever for Barack Obama in an interview with the Beckley Register-Herald last month, assuring everyone it was ok to support Obama because he can't do the things he wants to do , anyway.
In an interview published August 28 (but we just noticed it), Manchin said, in essence, not to worry about Obama's positions on guns, abortions or other social issues, because he won't be able to do anything about it.
Here's an excerpt:
No matter what issue is dear to West Virginians, be it abortion or Second Amendment rights, Manchin said no individual is ever going to alter the law, and Obama, one of the more liberal voices in politics, is no exception.
“One person, a governor, a president or whoever, doesn’t have the clout to change the things you’re concerned about when they (Republicans) get you all scared,” he said.
“They can’t change that. My goodness, (President Bill) Clinton had control of Congress and there wasn’t these crazy changes. Bush had control of Congress for a long time. He couldn’t undo Roe v. Wade or do whatever he wanted to do with it.”
Nor, the governor emphasized, should anyone fear that Obama can prompt radical changes, especially with regard to gun ownership.
“But all the people who try to use that as scare tactics and have been successful in the past ... it’s just so wrong,” Manchin said.
..."We passed the Castle law, you know. I don’t believe he will undo that whatsoever.”
So, in other words, don't worry about Barack Obama -- he won't be able to do anything. Nice endorsement, and also a window into the governor's mind, who apparently has not taken up the fight for pro-life issues because he doesn't believe that one person can make a difference.

"Obama In The Mud: So Much For Honesty"
Editorial
New Hampshire Union Leader
September 21, 2008
When Barack Obama first began campaigning in New Hampshire in early 2007, many voters swooned. We watched him speak to retirees in Claremont one snowy February day that year. Not a single voter we talked with before he spoke planned to vote for him.
Afterwards, many said they would. The word that spontaneously came from the lips of multiple attendees: sincere. They couldn't remember a politician who spoke with such sincerity, they said. And many of them had been voting since World War II.
We wonder what those same voters think of Obama's sincerity now. In the past few weeks, Obama has thrown so read more
