Weeks travels state, hits media circuit, prepares for first debate with Mojo
Russ Weeks continued traveling the state this week meeting voters and doing media interviews, including appearances on Howard Monroe's WVLY talk show in Wheeling on Monday and Tom Roten's WVHU show in Huntington on Tuesday.
Today, Weeks is scheduled to sit down with The Associated Press for a profile interview in Charleston.
Last night, Weeks attended a candidate forum in Charleston sponsored by the East End Association Charleston Women's Club.
Meanwhile, representatives of the campaign of Weeks and Gov. Joe Manchin met with officials of the West Virginia Broadcasters Assocation to iron out details for the first debate scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Clay Center in Charleston.
The one-hour face-to-face, which will be moderated by "Talkline" host Hoppy Kercheval, is scheduled to be carried live by all Charleston TV stations and many others around the state, as well as by the MetroNews radio network.
(Press Release) Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito released the following statement in reaction to Senator Joe Biden's comments on the use of coal in America:
"With America spending $700 billion a year on foreign oil, we must seek to make America energy independent.  Part of this solution is alternative fuels like wind, solar, nuclear and biomass.  However, we can not have a real energy plan in America that does not include coal as part of the solution.
"Our nation's coal resources are larger than the combined oil reserves of the rest of the world.  This is why I introduced the Clean Coal-Derived Fuels for Energy Security Act that mandates the United States produce six billion gallons of coal-to-liquid fuel by the year 2022.  We must invest in clean coal technology, and the bi-partisan energy bill I introduced creates a fund of up to $130 billion for clean coal and nuclear waster reserve without raising taxes.
"With Senator Joe Biden's comments in Maumee, Ohio, it is clear that coal is under attack by the liberal leadership in Washington.  The future of West Virginia and its vital resource are at stake in this election.  West Virginians know that you can not talk one way on the campaign trail and act differently in Washington.  Senator Biden's comments are an attack on West Virginia's future and good paying jobs in the state.  They reveal the real agenda of some in Washington to ban the use of coal in America which would be devastating to West Virginia's economy.
"Now that the real Obama-Biden plan to tax and then ban the use of coal has been revealed, it is not surprising that they have not made any campaign stops in West Virginia."
John McCain, meanwhile, recently promised,  "I will commit two billion dollars each year on clean-coal research and development.  We will build the demonstration plants, refine the techniques and equipment, and make clean coal a reality."
Democrat vice presidential candidate Joe "Gaffe" Biden was caught on tape promising "no coal plants here in America," further cementing the many reasons West Virginians have not to support the Obama-Biden ticket.

Walker: Keep race for court on the civil side
(Press Release) Supreme Court of Appeals candidate Beth Walker issued a call today for civility among the candidates as they debate the issues facing the Supreme Court in West Virginia.
"I am committed to a respectful discussion of the future of our court system in West Virginia.  I am disappointed that Mr. Ketchum has resorted to personal attacks that do not promote a serious dialogue about the real issues," said Walker.
Today's edition of the Charleston Daily Mail featured two stories relating to the Supreme Court race following Monday's meeting between all three candidates and that newspaper's editorial board.
